Orange County Commissioners Discuss Ban on Simulated Gambling

On June 28, 2011 Orange County Commissioners will discuss the operation of internet cafes with simulated gambling within Orange County. The discussion was brought forward by Commissioner Ted Edwards who seeks to ban simulated gambling activity.

The Board of County Commissioners will participate in a workshop where additional testimony will be heard from others including law enforcement agencies and other affected municipalities.

Since requesting the board discussion, Commissioner Edwards has addressed the Orange County Charter Review Commission on a possible County wide ban.

Some Café operators offer patrons chances to play internet casino type slot machine games in order to win cash and prizes. Because operators keep large sums of money on site and stay open late they have become targets for crime.

A memo requesting a Commission Discussion on adding language to the County’s gambling ordinance and changes to the County’s Charter was originally sent to Mayor Teresa Jacobs and Board members on May 24, 2011.
