Orange County Celebrates 12 Statewide Literacy Award Winners

The Florida Department of Education has announced Orange County Public Schools placed in three of four categories in the 2011 Just Read, Florida! Literacy Awards.

Union Park Middle School won the Reading Team of the Year for middle schools, Amy Brett currently at Chain of Lakes Middle won the Reading Teacher of the Year for middle schools while working at Freedom Middle School last year and Ocoee Middle School’s Janet Bergh won the Reading Coach of the Year for middle schools.

The winners were chosen from among district nominations based on their commitment to literacy, and their proven ability to promote and teach others about the fundamental skill of reading.

The Reading Coach of the Year award recognizes expertise in literacy and the ability to effectively deliver professional development activities related to literacy.

The Reading Teacher of the Year award recognizes demonstrated expertise in the area of reading and the effective use of innovative and/or original instructional materials and methods designed to enhance student learning.

The Reading Leadership Team of the Year award recognizes school reading teams that demonstrate leadership in building a school literacy culture through collegiality and collaboration.

OCPS Superintendent Ronald Blocker applauded the success of all Just Read, Florida! winners.

“This shows our intense focus on student achievement and what happens with the commitment of a high-performing and dedicated team,” said Blocker.
