Orange County Approves Deal with Expedia

The Orange County Commission on Tuesday approved a settlement agreement with the online-travel company Expedia in a high-profile fight about payment of hotel taxes.

The terms of the settlement were not disclosed, though it involved Expedia paying $5 million to $10 million, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

Orange is one of numerous Florida counties that have been in legal fights with Expedia and other online-travel companies about the proper amount of tourist-development taxes that should be paid.

The counties argue the firms have not forwarded the full amount of taxes due, while the companies contend the lawsuits would seek to force them to pay improper “services” taxes.

Lawmakers also are expected to consider proposals next year that would make clear the companies don’t have to pay the disputed amounts. Similar proposals did not pass this spring.
