Operation Summer's End In collaboration with the Tampa Police Department, USF Police, and the Florida Highway Patrol, HCSO focused its efforts on ensuring the safety of the local community members throughout the holiday weekend, according to law enforcement.

“Our deputies’ commitment and efforts this weekend undoubtedly made a difference by keeping our community safe. Each arrest of an impaired driver or boater is a step toward saving lives,” said Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister. “Operating any vehicle, whether on land or water, while under the influence endangers yourself and everyone nearby. We will not accept this dangerous behavior and will remain committed to preventing these reckless actions.”

The following are the totals for HCSO’s ‘Operation Summer’s End’ enforcement:

DUI:

  • Traffic Stops: 208
  • Citations: 12
  • Warnings: 196
  • DUI Arrests: 40

BUI:

  • Vessel Stops: 89
  • Safety Inspections: 89
  • Citations: 16
  • Warnings: 81
  • BUI Arrests: 1

The Tampa Police Department also ramped up efforts to curb dangerous driving, but they had a focus on illegal street racing and street takeovers like the one recently at the Tampa Convention Center. Overall, the various local law enforcement agencies wanted to balance education and enforcement, saying drivers were reminded of the importance of obeying traffic rules and sharing the road responsibly.

In addition to the Operation Summer’s End results, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office also provided video featuring the local DUI Unit, highlighting the work they do in the community.
