The Orlando Police Department will unveil Thursday, new technology that it plans to utilize to combat property crimes.
Known as CopDots, the technology is a unique method of marking personal property and consists of a high tech adhesive that contains thousands of tiny dots about the size of a grain of sand. Each dot has a unique and irremovable number, referred to as your DNA number. The DNA is applied with a pen-like applicator that is simple to use and allows the DNA code to be applied to any type of property.
The CopDots technology allows residents to partner with OPD and their community to work together to combat property theft.
CopDots President Shawn Andreas stated, “We are very honored to have Orlando PD, recognized as an agency that is a national leader in technology to utilize CopDots to fight property crimes. Having Orlando PD involved will provide a roadmap for these other large agencies that are about to implement the program within their cities and ultimately contribute to their efforts in fighting property crimes within their communities.”
“In addition to enforcing the law, crime prevention is always a priority. We always work with the residents to seek and utilize new technology such as CopDots to help reduce crime and keep Orlando a safe city,” Orlando Police Chief Paul Rooney said.
CopDots will provide Orlando Police Department with 1,000 samples that will be used within the city at various Neighborhood watch and community events. A powerful tool in property crime prevention, there will be no cost to OPD, as all equipment to support the technology is being provided by the company.
