The Orlando Police Department is warning residents about a phone scam where unknown callers are attempting to extort money from anyone that answers the telephone.
Police have received numerous reports from residents saying, they have been called by unknown individuals who indicate that a loved one is in their custody and that they should wire money to a certain location. The callers also indicate that if the money is not sent, the loved one will be harmed.
Police say, a majority of those who have received the calls have ignored them, but several persons have fallen victim to the scam and have wired money, as directed by the caller. Investigators also say, the persons making the calls, “spoof” their phone number in an attempt to not be located.
Anyone who receives a call of this nature should contact the law enforcement agency that provides service in your area, officials say.
