Only 49 Housing Units to be Certified as Crime Free

Forty-nine apartment communities in Orlando are on track to become certified as “Crime Free Multi-Housing” properties, with Fountains at Millenia to be named the first of its kind, a statement from the City of Orlando said.

Through the City’s new Crime Free Multi-Housing Initiative, rental property owners and residents are partnering with Orlando Police Department to eliminate crime in multi-housing rental properties.

On Thursday, February, 3rd, Orlando’s Mayor Buddy Dyer and OPD Chief, Val Demings will officially name Fountains at Millenia as the first certified Crime Free Multi-Housing complex.  Six other apartment complexes are expected to be certified this week.

“This new public safety initiative will further enhance the City’s partnership with our citizens as we continue to work together to keep crime out of our neighborhoods,” said Mayor Dyer.  “I am proud that at this early phase we already have 49 apartment communities in our City limits to become Crime Free Multi-Housing Certified and I hope to eventually have all our 225 complexes certified.”

Property owners are required to complete a three step program that includes specialized training and security, in order to become a certified Crime Free Multi-Housing complex.

In order for complexes to maintain their certification, all new residents will be required to sign a lease amendment that states residents will not engage in criminal behavior and every night, certified complexes will receive reports of residents arrested in the complex.
