Officials: Second Positve Case of Rabies Confirmed

The second positive case of rabies has been confirmed in Polk County today.

Polk County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control said it is the second case in 2011.

On August 11, the victim’s dogs found a bat in the yard of their residence located on Shimmering Drive, Lakeland.

Officials said, both dogs attacked the bat and had it in their mouths. The bat died as a result of the attack.

Polk County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control officers, who were contacted responded to the residence, impounded the bat and sent it for rabies testing.

The bat was confirmed positive for rabies by the State Laboratory today.

Officials said, the victims dogs will be quarantined for 45 days, as they were current on all vaccines.
