The City of Ocoee Police Department is reminding its citizens that, in preparation for Cinco de Mayo on Sunday, May 5, celebratory gunfire is dangerous and illegal.Â
“Anyone celebrating Cinco de Mayo by discharging a firearm does not realize the possible danger to others as a result their actions. It is commonly known that what goes up must come down. A bullet fired up into the air will come down. During celebrations associated with Cinco de Mayo, this should not be forgotten. A bullet can travel as much as two miles or more and when it comes down, it can kill,” said a statement from the Ocoee Police Department
Shooting a gun into the air is a crime punishable by up to a year in prison. If a person is injured, the penalties get much higher. If a death results, you can be charged with the death.
Anyone who sees someone discharging a firearm in the air, should immediately call 911.
Celebrate the holiday safely and responsibly. Don’t fire guns into the air.
