As President Obama has campaigned for a second term, he has said he would like to cut the growth of college tuition in half over the next decade. But, Obama, should he be re-elected on November 6, faces to major challenges – shrinking state budgets and a ‘do nothing’ Congress.
Over the past 10 years, average annual tuition for one year at a community college has jumped by 40 percent to $3,122, according to the College Board. At 4-year public universities, the cost has risen 68 percent to $7,692 a year.
Obama’s goal of slowing tuition growth, while not impossible, lacks specifics and is up against harsh realities, education experts say.
