President Barack Obama, speaking at the United Nations Climate Summit on Tuesday said, no nation is immune to climate change.
Mr. Obama and other world leaders gathered to discuss their actions and commitments to tackle the growing problem of climate change.
The past decade has been America’s hottest on record. And in the west, the wildfire season begins earlier in the spring and lasts later into the fall.
Noting that carbon emissions are still rising and this will make effects on climate change even more damaging over time, Mr. Obama called on China with the fastest increase in carbon pollution, to join the U.S. in leading the rest of the world in carbon reduction.
“We have a responsibility to lead,” Mr. Obama said to applause. “That’s what big nations have to do.”
However, he said that combating climate change will require significant cooperation on the part of all countries.
“We can only succeed in combating climate change if we are joined in this effort by every nation, developed and developing alike,” the president said. “Nobody gets a pass.”
“Today, I call on all countries to join us, not next year or the year after that, because no nation can meet this global threat alone,” he said.
