No Response From Obama, Yet

CARICOM is reportedly still awaiting a response from the Barack Obama administration on a request made late last year for a meeting.

Assistant Secretary General Colin Granderson told the Associated Press Thursday that the Guyana based organization is hoping for a meeting with Obama but has not yet obtained an answer.

Granderson says they hope to talk about how the global economic crisis is affecting the region when Obama attends the fifth Summit of the Americas in Trinidad next month.

He added that the 15-member group also wants to talk about an increase in narco trafficking between South America and the region.

Interestingly, the impact of tighter financial rules that could affect Caribbean off-shore industry, was not among the issues highlighted but Granderson said the by now `age-old` issue of deportation to the region is also of concern to leaders.

Critics have insisted that the Caribbean is low on the Obama radar despite the fact that three members with Caribbean roots are in his cabinet.
