New texting-while-driving law takes effect Tuesday

textingfinalFlorida drivers, from tomorrow, October 1, would be breaking the law if they are caught texting while driving.

Under the “Florida ban on Texting While Driving Law” drivers may not operate a motor vehicle in motion while texting, emailing and instant messaging.

The fine for first time offenders is a only $30 and subsequent offenses can result in points on a person’s drivers license.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is teaming up with AAA to launch a new campaign, “Put It Down” in an effort to educate the public and reduce distracted driving on Florida roadways. Events are planned and information is being shared across the state during the month of October. These activities include, participation at high school assemblies, radio public service announcement, collaboration with local law enforcement agencies and a variety of print messaging and electronic notices along Florida highways and turnpikes.

“Distracted driving is a serious danger on our roadway. We’re reminding drivers to be responsible and not text while driving,” said FDOT Secretary Ananth Prasad.

Florida is the 41st state in the nation where texting and driving is illegal.

Safety Tips:

*       Put the cell phone away or silence it while driving so you are not tempted
to respond while in motion.

*       Download an app that disables the device while in motion.

*       Designate a non-driving texter to respond for you.
