New Formula to Evaluate Teachers Coming Soon

Florida Education Commissioner Eric Smith gave tentative approval last week to a new formula used to evaluate some teachers that will eventually be used to determine their salaries.

This new formula includes test score data but also elements such as disability status, class size and attendance, which can impact a student’s performance.

A statewide committee of teachers, parents and administrators spent months determining what, besides test scores, should be considered when determining a teacher’s effectiveness in the classroom.

This new formula, which does rely on test score data, is required by the new teacher merit pay law.

Smith told the committee that he wants to revisit one part of the new formula – the school component. This component determines how much a school’s overall effectiveness should impact the teacher.

The committee will meet to discuss on Tuesday. Smith will then give final approval on Wednesday.
