National School Crossing Day, 8 Local Vacancies

Friday, February 5, 2010 is National School Crossing Appreciation Day.  Sheriff Jerry L. Demings and the School Crossing Guard Unit would like to thank all the school crossing guards for their hard work and dedication to the students of Orange County.

Every morning that school is in session, thousands of children sometimes alone or in groups walk to and from school. The students know that their friendly crossing guard will be there to take them safely across the street.

Currently there are 8 vacancies throughout Orange County.  Child safety is a major concern for Sheriff Demings.  The principal goal is to fill every vacancy as quickly as possible.  But if our citizens within the different communities do not sign up, many young schoolchildren may have to cross a busy street of Orange County without any adult supervision.

School Crossing Guards who work under contract with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and receive $9.25 an hour. They work two hours a day. Sheriff Demings provides state mandated training, retirement benefits, life insurance, fingerprint, background check, medical exam, physical ability test and equipment at no cost to applicants.
