Lawanna Gelzer, President of National Action Network Central Florida Chapter.

The National Action Network (NAN) Central Florida Chapter has named new leadership as the organization lays the foundation for a new wave of community organizing.

National Action Network is one of the leading civil rights organizations in the nation, with chapters throughout the U.S. Founded in 1991 by Reverend Al Sharpton, NAN works within the spirit and tradition of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to promote a modern civil rights agenda that includes the fight for one standard of justice. Since the Central Florida chapter is a newly formed chapter, it is their first priority to build working partnerships, resources, and finances.

Lawanna Gelzer was elected President in recent elections. Gelzer has been a community visionary as demonstrated by her involvement with more than 30 organizations and she has run for local office in the past. Gelzer has worked with community groups such as the League of Women Voters of Orange County, Tangelo Park YMCA, Orlando’s Community Development Neighborhood Improvement Corporation, and the Mayor’s Dr. Martin Luther King Commission to help improve the lives of many in Orange County. The executive committee will include Temia Brinson, Vice President, Richard Thomas, Treasurer, and Dr. Tim Adams, Secretary.

Monthly meetings will be on the 1st Monday of each month at 7:00pm.

NAN fights to empower people by providing extensive voter education, services aiding the poor, supporting economically small community businesses, confronting racism and violation of civil and human rights.
