Missouri Couple Killed in I-4 Crash After Pickup Lands on SUV

Fatal-Crash-generic-27825957-480-x-270A Missouri couple was killed when a Chevy pickup truck landed on top of the GMC SUV they were in on Interstate 4, in Volusia County.

The crash happened just before 9:30 p.m. on I-4 near mile marker 116, Florida Highway Patrol said.

The deceased are Phil Rutkowski, 66, and Judith Rutkowski, 69, of Smithville, Missouri.

Troopers say, the Chevy pickup driven by Timothy Engels, 44, of De Bary, was heading westbound on I-4, when it crashed into the GMC SUV that was going eastbound. Phil Rutkowski was driving the GMC SUV.

Witnesses told investigators that the Chevy pickup made an abrupt lane change and the driver lost control. Engels struck the center median, vaunted over the guardrail and landed on top of the GMC SUV in the eastbound lanes.

Phil Rutkowski was pronounced dead on the scene by the Medical Examiner.

Judith Rutkowski died at the Halifax Medical Center.

Engels and his passenger, Jason Regan, 29, of Sanford, both sustained serious injuries.

Troopers say, the crash remains under investigation and charges are pending against Engels.
