Senior Brad Bindas and junior Justus Griffith each won their respective weight class in record fashion to lead Men’s Weightlifting to a runner-up finish in the Metro West Conference Championship Wednesday. Bindas shattered all three school records, two of his own, in the 169 pound class with a total lift of 605 pounds, a clean and jerk of 270 pounds and a bench press of 335 pounds, which eclipsed Joe Compolongo’s record of 330 pounds set back in 2003. Second place finishers included Justyn Nakashima at 139, Trent Massey at 154 (who tied for first but lost in a tiebreaker) and Maurice Small at 169. Senior Thomas Armstrong placed third at 154 pounds, just five pounds shy of first place. Griffith and Bindas will represent Dr. Phillips at next Saturday’s State Championship in Kissimmee.
