Led by singles champions Cooper Vissers, Izzy Almontaser and Ajay Govindaraj, Men’s Tennis captured the program’s 8th District Championship with 17 points, a five point advantage over second place Olympia yesterday at Lake Cane. Vissers won the title at line two (6-1, 4-0), Almontaser follwed up with the title in line three (6-0, 6-3) and Govindaraj won line four (6-4, 6-2). Marcelo Goncalves was District runner-up in line five. Vissers teamed up with Peter San Pedro to win the District Championship in line one doubles (6-1, 7-5) and the pair qualified automatically for the State Tournament (April 15th) while Almontaser and Govindaraj were runners-up in line two doubles. DP advances to Regional competition and will host the District 3 runner-up team April 10th.
Women’s Tennis placed second at the District 4 Championship yesterday at Lake Cane and will advance to Regional play next Tuesday. Sophomore Sarah Baron won her second straight District Championship at line one singles (6-2, 6-1) and qualified automatically for the State Tournament April 15th. Baron teamed up with Maria Contreras in line one doubles and the two captured their second consecutive District Championship (6-1, 6-0) to advance to theState Tournament as well. Contreras, Zoe Monge, Sara Veugeler and Tyler Brown finished as District runners-up in lines two through five,respectively. DP will travel to the District 3 champion next Tuesday for Regional Tournament competition.
Jecoliah Pratt pitched four perfect innings, striking out eight, as Softball hammered visiting Edgewater, 16-0. Offensive leaders were Caitlyn Jones (2-2, walk, twoRBIs, three runs), Kaley Eastwood (1-1, double, two walks, RBI, four runs), Sarah Kollas (2-3, three runs, RBI), and Sarah Lang (1-2,two walks, two RBIs), who ended the game with a walk-off inside the park homerun. DP (13-6) has won three straight, outscoring their opponents, 43-3.
Daniel Rodriguez struck out five over five innings and scattered five hits to pick up the victory as Baseball clipped Roswell, Georgia, 2-1. DP jumped on the board in the first inning when Walker Haymaker’s base hit to left brought in Billy Underwood for a 1-0 lead. In the fourth, Jalen Phillips laceda one-out double down the right field line, went to third on Jakob Probst’s single through the hole and scored on an RBI fielder’s choice by Nick Strasser for the winning run. Probst fanned two batters in the sixth before Ryan Larson came on in the seventh and struck out two to pick up the save.
Justn Soffer finished with12 kills, Logan Maladecki added nine and Hunter Heide closed with eight as Men’s Volleyball rolled to their 11th straight victory with a sweep of host Ocoee, 25-10, 25-17, 25-17. DP (13-2) has swept their last seven matches. JV Volley ball picked up their eighth straight victory with a sweep of host Ocoee, 25-14, 25-10. Anthony Rojastallied 12 service points in the first game with Michael Sanders (11digs), Kartel Topgul (three digs) and Jahmiah Cyrus (five kills) rounding out the statistical leader board.
Senior Brad Bindas captured first place in the 169 pound weight class at the Men’s Weightlifting Sectional Championship and earned an automatic trip to the State Championship meet April 20th. Bindas led a contingent of sixlifters and the Panthers represented well. Justus Griffith (119), Justyn Nakashima (139) and Maurice Small (169) all placed second in their class and are awaiting results from other Sectionals to determine whether they qualify for the State Championship meet. Trent Massey placed third inthe 154 pound class and Thomas Armstrong finished fourth at 154 pounds.DP will look to defend their Metro Conference Championship next Wedsnesday at Wekiva.
Swimming and Diving announced four team members have been named NISCA Academic All-Americans. Charlie Barnett, Jordan DeJager, Shannon MacNeil and Katie Messinger were bestowed the honor this week and all have weighted grade point averages well over 4.3. Barnett and MacNeil have also earned NISCA All-American status for Water Polo as well, while Messinger is graduating in June…a full school year early!
Men’s Cross Country and Track and Field standout Logan Kruse committed to Rice University in Houston, Texas. Kruse will sign with the Owls at DP’s National Signing Day ceremony Wednesday, April 11th at10:30 am in front of the Media Center.
