As medical marijuana legislation continues navigating uncertainty in the state legislature, “celebrity” lawyer John Morgan has announced he’s going to take the issue to the ballot in 2014.

Morgan, the top trial lawyer in Orlando and a major political donor, will lead the statewide medical marijuana constitutional amendment campaign in part because of personal reasons.  Morgan’s father struggled with cancer and emphysema but was able to improve functions like eating and be happy thanks to marijuana.

Charlie Crist is an employee of Morgan & Morgan, and even though Morgan claims he has not discussed the campaign with Crist, it will now likely become a hot 2014 gubernatorial issue. Recent Florida polling shows wide support for medical marijuana, with nearly 70% of Floridians supporting it.

Morgan has recently hosted President Barack Obama, former President Bill Clinton, Senator Bill Nelson and many other big names in politics at his home for major fundraisers. He has promised to tap his political and fundraising bases for the medical marijuana campaign.
