University system Chancellor Frank Brogan wrote Wednesday to the state’s congressional delegation to express concerns about the fate of money that medical schools get to treat Medicaid patients as the state moves to overhaul the Medicaid system.
Several state medical schools and teaching hospitals rely on the Medicaid physician supplemental payment program, which pays them extra money for treating the poor through Medicaid.
The program generates more than $100 million in federal matching funds to the University of South Florida, Florida State University, and the University of Florida at Gainesville and Jacksonville, the letter said. The University of Miami also gets some funding through the Medicaid physician supplemental payment program.
“We look forward to working with all parties involved to ensure that the physician supplemental payment program is protected and that Medicaid patients continue to have access to the quality services of the faculty physicians from Florida’s medical schools,” the letter said.
