Olympic gold was in town today. Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs gave Gabrielle Douglas the key to Orange County in a ceremony Thursday evening.

Gabby Douglas, a 16-year-old Olympic gold medalist from Virginia Beach, Va., is a role model to millions of girls after becoming the first African-American to win the Olympic all-around title in gymnastics. At the 2012 London Olympics, Douglas earned the nickname “Flying Squirrel” after her impressive aerial routines.

Douglas met with fans (and elected officials) and signed copies of her first book, Grace, Gold and Glory: My Leap of Faith, a memoir about her childhood, her journey in gymnastics, her struggles with racial bullying and her success at the Olympics.

Orlando City Commissioner Sam Ings also greeted the Olympian at the Orlando Public Library.
