A Sanford man fleeing deputies after he ditched his own vehicle, was killed when a patrol car ran over him, Florida Highway Patrol said.

Marlon Robert Brown, 38, was pronounced dead by the Medical Examiner, after being struck by a Chevy Impala that DeLand Officer James Harris was driving.   The incident happened on Delaware Avenue in Volusia County just after 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

FHP said, it began with a Volusia County deputy attempted to stop Brown for a seat belt violation on Green Avenue at Parsons Avenue.  But Brown took off.

Alerted, two Deland police cars began following Brown as he traveled westbound on Beresford Avenue in his Toyota.  Brown then made a left turn onto Delaware Avenue, traveled into an empty lot and bailed from the vehicle. One of the police cars stopped behind Brown’s vehicle, but the other patrol car pulled to the left.

Brown was hit and run over by the second patrol car driven by Officer James Harris, as he tried to escape.  He died on the scene.

The incident is still under investigated.
