A drunk driver who crashed into the back of a Chevrolet Camaro, seriously injuring the driver, then fled the scene of the crash, was arrested Wednesday, Polk County deputies say.
22-year-old David Breit, of Lakeland is charged with a DUI crash involving seriously bodily injury and leaving the scene of the crash.
Investigators say, Breit, who admitted to drinking prior to the crash, rear ended a Chevrolet Camaro on February 19, on U.S. Highway 98, just south of the entrance to Polk State College/USF campus in Lakeland. The Camaro was being driven by Garrett M. Putnam, 22, of Winter Haven.
Putnam suffered serious injuries and continues to undergo treatment, investigators said.
Breit was not at the crash scene when traffic investigators arrived.
Investigators say, Breit had a blood alcohol level of .150 g/100 mL, almost twice the legal limit of .08. He was driving over 87 MPH at the time of the crash, in a 55 MPH zone, deputies also said.
Breit was located near Fort Frasier Trail and Winterlake Road, arrested and booked into the Polk County Jail.
