Man Driving 100 MPH in Central Florida Flees until Hitting Stop Sticks

A man driving 100 mph in Central Florida fled from law enforcement until he hit stop sticks and surrendered.

The driver went by local deputies at approximately 100 miles per hour in Merritt Island, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s office.

The incident happened when a deputy was conducting traffic enforcement in the area of SR 528 and 401 when he observed the speeding vehicle. He attempted to catch up to the vehicle and conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle began maneuvering in between traffic and picked up speed.

Local law enforcement deployed helicopter STAR to maintain a visual on the vehicle as other units arrived to assist.

The driver, Taparree Shelton, then decided to travel onto Kennedy Space Center property, where eventually officers at KSC were able to deploy stop sticks causing the front tires of Shelton’s car to go out, brining him to a stop.

He made a smart decision by peacefully exiting the vehicle and surrendering to the deputies and officers on scene.

Law enforcement said they located approximately two grams of a substance that field tested positive for cocaine on the floorboard near the driver seat.

Shelton was charged with two counts of fleeing and eluding, possession of cocaine, and reckless driving, and was transported to jail on a $13,000 bond.

“Folks, you know the deal, if you try to run from us in Brevard County we promise you’ll only go to jail tired,” said Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey.
