Man Dies After Crash, Calls Brother, Not 911

Volusia County deputies said they found the body of a motorcyclist early Tuesday morning who had been in an accident and broke his leg.

Investigators said, around 11:00pm Monday, the motorcyclist’s friend called the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office because she hadn’t heard from him and knew he was driving up to Daytona Beach. Police then searched for the man, who was identified as 46-year-old Ronald Dean Courtney, but found nothing.

Troopers said Courtney was traveling northbound on US-1 when he lost control of the motorcycle, struck a culvert on the side of the road and was ejected into the water.

Officers said Courtney called his brother around 2:30am, who then called the Kennedy Space Center, where the victim worked. KSC officials then called Volusia County Fire Rescue to report the accident.

It was unclear why the man’s brother didn’t call 911.

Deputies conducted an air and ground search for the man on US-1 and Fullerton Grove Road in Oakhill (see map). They used his cell phone to locate him, but searchers said they found him dead near his motorcycle.
