Orlando City Council unanimously approved yesterday a sub-lease and funding agreement for the Mad Cow Theatre at 54 West Church Street, allowing for a 2-theatre complex to be constructed Downtown Orlando.
The theatre announced Monday too, it had received a major gift of $400,000 from benefactor, Hariette Lake.
At a total project cost of $1.3 million, the city of Orlando will contribute $100,000 and the landlord/developer over $708,000.
Dubbed one of Orlando’s most respected professional theatre companies, Mad Cow Theatre is projected to open at its new home in the fall of 2012.
Founded in 1997, the theatre moved downtown in 2000 and currently hosts 12,000-15,000 patrons and more than 200 events each year.
Mad Cow’s economic impact on the city is estimated at $1.2 million annually, but with its new facility and increased capacity this is expected to be boosted to at least $3 million.
Over the years, the theatre has presented a number of compelling works to a wide-range of audiences with a passion for both classic and contemporary play and has received numerous awards, including being named ‘Best Theatre’ by Orlando Magazine in 2011, 2010, 2008 and 2007.
