Macnab Re-elected President of League of Women Voters

The League of Women Voters of Florida announced its new board of directors on Monday, following its convention which concluded in Tallahassee last month.

Deirdre Macnab

Deirdre Macnab, the current president, has been re-elected to serve in that capacity, a statement from the League said. Pam Goodman, the former CEO of Express Limited is the League’s new vice president.

Other directors included Marilynn Wills, former state president, and Annie Betancourt, a former 12-year state legislator from Miami. Charley Williams is the first male board member the League has had in several years, and his election marks an important step as the Florida League seeks to encourage rapid growth in this area.

The board also has several young professional women, including Katie Ross of Jacksonville and Lisa Meyers of St. Petersburg.

Macnab said, “This new board faces huge challenges and opportunities as we forge a team to engage Floridians of all ages and interests to get informed and active in our local and state governments.”

She particularly singled out younger voters as a demographic that must rise to the challenge.

“There is no time to waste,” Macnab said. “Florida needs the ideas, energy and talents of our newer citizens right away. Those who don’t vote have no right to complain!”

The Florida League will soon be introducing a League University to train younger citizens on the skills of public speaking and running effective and civil meetings. The League hopes to encourage a wider engagement by Florida’s citizens who will feel more confident and prepared to step forward and serve.
