With Tax Day looming and 44 million Americans expecting to pay this year’s taxes late due to the COVID-19 pandemic, WalletHub released its 2022 Taxpayer Survey, as well as its yearly report on the States with the Highest & Lowest Tax Rates in order to help people better understand this confusing time of year. Overall, Florida wasn’t the lowest tax rates in the country, but the state does rank well nationally.
According to the WalletHub survey results, Florida has the 6th lowest tax rates in the country. One reason Florida has been so attractive to people relocating here probably relates to the fact that half of people surveyed would move to a different state to avoid taxes. The tax rates in Florida included (1=lowest, 25-average):
- 6th – Overall Effective State & Local Tax Rate
- 1st – Income Tax
- 24th – Real-Estate Tax
- 1st – Vehicle Property Tax
- 38th – Sales & Excise Taxes
Overall, the 2022 Taxpayer Survey showed 72% of Americans think the government should have provided more tax relief due to COVID-19.
At the same time, 81% of people say the government does not spend their tax dollars wisely. That must mean people want more direct relief in their pockets compared to government programs.
Distrust in America remains high, even on taxes, as 48% of Americans think that their neighbors cheat on their taxes. Maybe they’re cheating on taxes because 66% of people said they think their current tax rate is too high.
