Loving Living Legends

I have an affinity for distinguished-looking men!

Show me an older, refined, and intelligent man and I will, breathlessly, fall “head over heels” (laugh out loud)!

I’m probably predestined to this fate due to genetics. Sometimes, wonder if it’s because of being born under the “goddess of love” sign. Regardless, this “cougar” still has impeccable and discriminating taste.

You, go, girl!

Serendipity impelled me to purchase a book that had captured my attention. Admittedly, I was initially reluctant to buy it, but my inquisitive nature vetoed my hesitancy. Never imagined how purchasing a book on a whim could dramatically alter my destiny!

God doesn’t call the qualified. He qualifies the call.”

Unbeknownst to me, God was broadening my “sphere of influence” with a circle of James Baldwin-like gladiators beginning with the introduction to Lucius Gantt.

Upon completing his book, I Talked About the Beast, I felt compelled to call Mr. Gantt to thank him for being the lubricant for my soul.

Calling anyone to discuss the merits of their work product is very uncharacteristic of me. However, this fiery and “take no prisoners” book levitated so many raw emotions that were buried deeply inside of me. Could it be true that I finally found someone who had systematically unclogged every Harriet, Sojourner, and Rosa blood vessel that connected to my heart?

The only antidote to this new-found esprit de corps was to contact this “living legend” to inform him on how discombobulated I was feeling as a result of reading about his advocacy and activism!

A telephone call and a succession of e-mails led to our visit.

Like an ancient Chinese disciple, I sat beside my “living legend” and cherished each word that oozed from the crevices of his mouth.

As he spoke, my eyes slowly memorized every grid of life on his handsome, cinnamon face. As we embraced, I treasured the warmth from his statuesque arms. As we exchanged eye contact, I marveled at the twinkle in his eyes. As we conversed, like the gills of a fish, I inhaled each of the advisements emanating from his encyclopedic mind.

Love at first sight? You bet ‘cha!

I “loved” the fact that although he is overworked and under rested, Mr. Gantt never ceases to challenge the “modern-day Pharaohs.”

I “loved” the fact that he eloquently “surprises his critics and amazes his adversaries.”

I “loved” the fact that he isn’t tepid and neither is he afraid to affront the “system.”

I “loved” the fact that he continues to champion on behalf of the underserved, the invisible, and the voiceless.

I “loved” the fact that in spite of personal sacrifices and maladies that has tested his mettle, he continues to sojourn—-often alone.

Once heard an adage that says “we are so busy telling people at funerals goodbye when we never took the time to tell them hello!”

As he escorted me to my vehicle, Mr. Gantt so aptly noted that a swarm of “love bugs” had enveloped us.

It was confirmation of what I already knew.

The angels had consecrated our LOVE!
