Central Florida unemployment rate for May 2010 is 11.1 percent, down by 0.3 percentage point from the April rate of 11.4 percent, the Agency for Workforce Innovation said on Friday. While the jobless rate edged down in May, it is higher than the 10.0 percent recorded one year ago.
In the Orlando Metropolitan Statical Area (Lake, Orange, Osceola and Seminole) there are 124,438 unemployment residents out of a labor force of 1.1 million. In May 2010, 12,990 more people are unemployed as compared with May 2009.
For Orange County alone, 66,766 persons are without work out of a labor force of 602,665, as of May 2010, and 6,714 more are unemployed, when compared to one year ago.
In Brevard County, the unemployment rate stood at 11.0 percent in May 2010, compared with 9.9 percent in May 2009; Osceola County, 12.0 percent as against 10.4 percent one year ago; Lake County, 11.5 percent compared to 10.5 percent in May 2009 and Seminole County, 10.5 percent compared to 9.5 percent one year ago.
Meanwhile, Florida’s unemployment for May 2010 declined slightly to 11.7 percent, down by 0.3 percentage points from the April rate of 12.0 percent. This is the second monthly decline in the state’s unemployment rate since February 2006. However, the May 2010 figures mean that 1.1 million people cannot find jobs out of a labor force of 9.3 million.
According to the US Labor Department, the national jobless rate edged down by 0.2 percentage points to 9.7 percent in May 2010, but was up from 9.4 percent in May 2009.
