Orange County Public Schools recently announced that Freedom High School was recertified as an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) National Demonstration School. For the second time, the school fulfilled the rigorous requirements.
AVID is a data-driven program proven to close the achievement gap in education, primarily with students from lower socio-economic backgrounds, and prepare them for post-secondary education. Students in an AVID program learn the necessary skills to be successful in advanced academic coursework and knowledgeable about the importance of higher education.
With an intense focus on student achievement, AVID teaches students focused notetaking and studying, test-taking and organizational skills. Students also receive support through a collaborative tutoring group and peer counseling.
“Freedom High School is a stellar example of an AVID teaching and learning center,” the AVID validation committee wrote. “It was evident that all stakeholders play integral roles in the AVID College and Career Readiness System. We acknowledge the challenging work the school has done since the pandemic and applaud the arduous work and dedication of everyone.”
As a National Demonstration School, the Orlando high school underwent a rigorous validation process, that included a visit from the national review committee and data evidence of student outcomes.
As one of a select group of sites honored, OCPS’ Freedom High School is in an elite category among more than 8,000 schools in 49 states across the U.S. and internationally.
