The leaders of the Florida Department of Health in Seminole and Orange counties have been elected to top positions with the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO). Swannie Jett, Dr.PH, MSc, Health Officer for the Department of Health in Seminole County is the newly-elected Vice President of NACCHO and Kevin M. Sherin, MD, MPH, MBA, Health Officer for the Department of Health in Orange County has been re-elected to the NACCHO board.
Dr. Jett serves as Health Officer for 450,000 residents in Seminole County. Dr. Sherin serves as Health Officer for 1.2 million residents and 55 million visitors each year in Orange County. Both are leading community initiatives to strengthen the health department infrastructure by improving funding streams, workforce competencies, and creating partnerships to improve population health outcomes.
Dr. Jett is a Captain in the Air Force National Guard and in 2011 completed the National Public Health Leadership Institute and NACCHO’s Survive and Thrive. Dr. Jett is passionate about addressing the issues of environmental justice, climate change and health equity. After graduating from Tennessee State University with a BS in Agricultural Statistics as well as a MS in Bio-Systems Engineering from the University of Tennessee, Jett received a Doctorate in Public Health with emphasis in Preventive Medicine from the University of Kentucky.
Dr. Sherin completed CDC’s public health leadership institute, served the Illinois Board of Health, was board chair of the Florida Public Health Institute, President of the American Association of Public Health Physicians (AAPHP), and Orange County Medical Society. He is the current AMA delegate to for AAPHP. He holds a BA from Notre Dame, MD from Loyola Medical School, MPH from the College Of Public Health at UIC, and MBA from the University of Massachusetts. His top priorities are the State Surgeon General’s Healthiest Weight initiative, public health accreditation, and health equity.
