After receiving unprecedented access to the new Acropolis Museum in Greece, special access inside the Parthenon and a rare tour around the pillars of the Propylea, photographer Josh Garrick will unveil exclusive photography at an exhibit reception on Friday, Nov. 9 at the Art & History Museum in Maitland.
Garrick’s display, which is part of the museum’s Culture and Cocktail series, will showcase intricate and often unseen details of illustrious Greek monuments. The photography collection will be featured for one night only.
Several monumental new photographic works will serve as the focal point of the special exhibit. Some works will be printed on aluminum di-bond while Garrick also experimented with printing on Plexiglas along with traditional silver gelatin prints and digital works. One of Garrick’s monumental works on aluminum will be unveiled at the event by Catherine Kassianides. Kassianides and her husband George purchased the work in order to present as part of the Art & History Museum’s permanent collection.
“My obsessive respect for all-things Greek comes from the fact that what we most treasure – our legacy of art, history, theatre, and philosophy – can all be traced to that singular place and time in history,” said Garrick. “I believe the responsibility of the photographer is to help the viewer ‘see in a different way,’ and out of respect for those geniuses who lived in Athens 2500 years ago, I feel a ‘religious responsibility’ when I photograph their ancient statues and monuments.”
Garrick, who has had photographs published in archaeology magazines, the New York Post and on the cover of the New York Gallery Guide, adds these works to his more than 1,000 photos he’s taken in his career. All members of the public are invited to attend the exhibit’s unveiling.
