Linda Stewart Squawks at “The Segal Tax Cut Plan”

Bill Segal, one of the candidates in the race for Orange County Mayor, unveiled today “The Segal Tax Cut Plan” which would cut property taxes for homeowners in Orange County by $20 million.  According to the Plan, each homeowner would see their millage drop by a 1/4 mil, over a two year period.

“People are struggling to pay their bills and do more with less.  Government needs to do the same,” Segal said.  “We can cut taxes and I have a way to pay for it.”

But, Orange County Commissioner Linda Stewart, also a candidate in the Orange County Mayoral race is not convinced about “The Segal Tax Cut Plan”.  Noting the limited time for public review of the Plan prior to the August 24th primary, Stewart said in a statement that, it is “yet another wild eyed scheme from his {Segal’s} campaign gurus.”

“As best as we can tell, this idea would cut another $20-million from the budget while saving the average homeowner about $35 per year,”  said Stewart.  “Even more vital services our citizens depend on will be cut so Segal can give everyone a $35 check.”

Segal also said at his press conference today that, he wants to change the way health care is delivered to the county’s employees.

Observing that the current system is expensive and costs are rapidly escalating, Segal wants to adopt a more cost effective model for health care delivery, along the lines implemented by Orlando hotel owner, Harry Rosen.

“We have to bring down our health care costs,” said Segal. “With this plan we will pay less to insure government workers and pass the savings on to taxpayers.”

In addition to Segal and Stewart, there are two other leading contenders in the race for Orange County Mayor, former Orange County Commissioner Ms. Teresa Jacobs and businessman, Mr. Matthew Falconer.
