Some incumbent politicians will stop at nothing, including blatant lies, to scare voters away from setting rules for redistricting.
For the past few weeks, Protect Your Vote, a campaign run by incumbent politicians, lobbyists, and special interests, has tried to frighten voters by using dishonorable tactics. They have even made “robo calls” and e-blasted letters that contain blatant lies. The League of Women Voters of Florida urges voters to show this group that they cannot get away with it…by voting YES on Amendments 5 and 6.
For too long our elected officials have stacked the decks, written their own rules, and relied on backroom deals to ensure their own re-election.
And the state has taken notice! That’s why every major newspaper in Florida, in addition to other large nonpartisan organizations such as the AARP, League of Cities, Florida Association of Counties, NAACP, and Democracia Ahora, are supporting Amendments 5 and 6.
The League of Women Voters of Florida strongly supports clear and fair discussion about the Fair Districts Amendments, but we will not condone groups like Protect Your Vote as they work to misrepresent the issue to voters.
Today, the League hopes that Florida voters will see through the scare tactics and vote to establish stronger criteria for redrawing legislative and congressional districts. According to League president Deirdre Macnab, “the best thing citizens can do to protect their own votes in the state of Florida is vote YES on Amendments 5 and 6 today at the polls.”
