League Urges Voters to End Gerrymandering

The League of Women Voters of Florida today announced the positions it is taking on the six Amendments that will appear on the November 2nd ballot.

After extensive research, in conjunction with a comprehensive review of our approved positions, the League has reached consensus on the following constitutional issues on Florida’s 2010 ballot:

Amendment 1 – Oppose
Amendment 2 – Oppose
Amendment 4 – No Position Taken
Amendment 5 – Support
Amendment 6 – Support
Amendment 8 – No Position Taken
Referendum for 2010 Election – Oppose

An explanation of all of these League positions is posted online at: League Positions on 2010 Ballot.

“In supporting the Fair Districts Amendments, which the League has worked towards for decades, we urge Florida voters to VOTE YES on 5 & 6 to end gerrymandering by creating fair and contiguous representative districts,” states Deirdre Macnab, President of the League of Women Voters of Florida. “It’s time for voters to choose their elected officials, instead of elected officials continuing to choose their voters through gerrymandering.”

The League of Women Voters of Florida has conducted numerous studies and regularly publishes positions on issues of importance to the voters of Florida. Voters can get more information on League issues and positions can be found in STUDY AND ACTION, available online at www.TheFloridaVoter.org.
