The League of Women Voters of Orange County (LWVOC) on Thursday elected a triumvirate to lead the organization into the 2010 election year and beyond. Anne Geiger, Ann Hellmuth and Charley Williams are volunteering their time to share the duties of the presidency. Hellmuth and Williams have previously served on the League’s Board of Directors, Williams most recently as first vice president.

“Inspiring good government is an informed, engaged electorate, and the League is positioned to make sure that’s not only established but maintained,” stated Geiger at the League’s annual meeting, on behalf of all three sharing the presidency of the League of Women Voters of Orange County.

“We’re looking forward to working with everyone toward this end,” added Hellmuth.

Williams said, “The League has always been a  dynamic community forum for focused discussions of citizen and voter concerns, with participation by both women and men alike.”

Current issues, prioritized by the membership, on the League’s slate include:

* Transportation: Creation of a regional, multimodal public transportation system with dedicated funds, and determining a adequate funding source for Lynx
* Fair Districts: Support statewide efforts to end gerrymandering of Florida’s congressional districts
* Education: Monitor budgetary cuts, lobby for dedicated funding for Florida’s schools, and continued improvement of Orange County’s Public School District
* Local Government: Promote transparency of our local government and continued public input in policy debate and decisions, and review the current structure of Orange County government
* Voter Services: Increase voter education, registration and participation, protection of citizen’s right and access to voting, which includes increased early and absentee voting opportunities

Additionally, LWVOC membership’s directives for focus in 2009-2010 include studying the need for a Child Services Council in Orange County, supporting juvenile justice efforts, expanding civic education efforts and protecting Central Florida’s water supply and other natural resources. As always, the mission of the non-partisan League is the informed and active participation of citizens in government, increased understanding of major public policy issues, and understanding of public policy through education and advocacy.
Geiger, Hellmuth and Williams are all available for interviews.
