Lawmaker: “C” Average Could Earn Students ‘Career Diplomas’

High school students would be able to obtain “career” diplomas in high school if a bill (HB 111) filed by Rep. Bryan Nelson, R-Apopka, becomes law.

The bill calls for students seeking career diplomas to take seven credits in career and technical training, along with courses in social studies, mathematics and science.

The student must maintain a “C” average in the career-oriented courses.

There is no Senate sponsor of the bill yet, but Florida lawmakers are increasingly interested in promoting career-oriented education.

For instance, a new law this year allows school districts to set up middle school career academies.
