Lake County to host ‘Reduce your risk of Diabetes’ course

diabetesfinalThe University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension in Lake County is hosting a three-part course called “Reduce Your Risk of Diabetes.” The classes will be held from 10 a.m. – noon on Wednesdays, March 26, April 2 and April 9 at the Lake County Agricultural Center, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares. Participation in all three is suggested.

“The series will help residents understand how diabetes affects their health and learn about nutrition, planning healthy meals, food labels, portions and more,” said Julie England, extension agent with UF/IFAS Extension in Lake County, who is presenting the series.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that one in every three adults in the United States has prediabetes, a serious health condition that increases the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Most people living with prediabetes do not know they have it. A person with the condition has a blood sugar level higher than normal, but not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes.

“Without lifestyle changes to improve their health, 15 – 30 percent of people with prediabetes will develop Type 2 diabetes within five years,” said England.

Registration for the course is required by March 24 at https://lakediabetes2014.eventbrite.com or by calling 352-343-4101 ext. 2719 or 2721. The materials fee is $10, but those who are unable to pay should contact England.
