Kottkamp backs Rubio, Will Keep Gay Adoption Ban as AG (Video)

Florida’s Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp, threw his support behind Republican candidate Marco Rubio in the race for the U.S. Senate, abandoning his boss, Governor Charlie Crist, running now as an independent for the U.S. Senate.

“I cannot in good conscience support a candidate who will go to Washington and push for passage of the Obama agenda,” Kottkamp said of Crist in a statement. “Too much is at stake in this election and I’m proud to say I support Marco Rubio.”

Kottkamp, one of three Republican candidates seeking the nomination in the race for Attorney General, told the Sun Sentinel recently that should he become the next Attorney General, he will maintain the current ban on gay and lesbian adoptions.   In fact, Kottkamp went further to suggest there is data which support that the best outcomes for a child is to have a mom and dad.

“…there is so much data that demonstrates the best possible upbringing for a child is to be in a home with a mom and dad,” Kottkamp said. “It is not even debatable.”

When asked to supply the data, Kottkamp said that he did not carry it around in his back pocket, but continued to insist that there is data that says a child is better off with a mother and father.

While Kottkamp could not cite a single study to support his “personal belief”, he told the Sun Sentinel that he was unsure whether the studies dealt with single parents or same sex parents.

Asked whether he believed that opening up the adoption process to gays and lesbians would increase the adoption rate, Kottkamp said that he did not know.

“I don’t know, that’s an assumption. You can’t do all this in generalities. It’s hard to know.  Every case is different, every child is different..,” Kottkamp said.

Florida is the only state in the country that retains a ban on gay and lesbian adoptions.
