Meek, the Billionaire & the Florida $enate Show

The Florida primary race for U.S. Senate got a little murkier today.  Just as presumptive Democratic nominee Kendrick Meek was getting into his stride, another contender,  billionaire  businessman Jeff Greene has entered the race.

Kendrick Meek

“I am an outsider, the only candidate who isn’t a career politician. I’ve succeeded in the real world of hard work — the others have only succeeded at running for political office after office,” Greene said, the Miami Herald reports.

Greene could become a major player in the race and pose a problem for Meek in clinching his party’s nomination.  He will have the money to outspend Meek who is not well-known outside South Florida, making for an interesting contest.   Moreover, Greene could gain quick traction with easily recognizable names like boxer Mike Tyson and Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss, a friend of the candidate.  He has made millions from the collapse of the housing market, the paper reports.

Another contender is former North Miami mayor Kevin Burns who on Thursday filed papers in Tallahassee for his Democratic primary campaign for U.S. Senate.

Burns says that his experience as a mayor and business would stand him in good stead to become a U.S. Senator and besides he is an “outsider”.  And funnily enough, he touts his international experience based on his several trips to Haiti.

Just as Floridians thought they would only have to get accustomed to names like Crist, Rubio and Meek, now Greene has entered the race!   There may be others, who knows?
