The judge presiding over the second degree murder case of George Zimmerman, will not be stepping down.
On Wednesday, Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester denied a motion filed by Zimmerman’s defense attorney to disqualify himself because of disparaging remarks the judge made during an earlier bond hearing.
Zimmerman’s attorney, Mark O’Mara filed the motion on July 13, after a bond hearing in which Lester questioned Zimmerman’s honesty, suggesting that he was preparing to flee the country.
Lester wrote that Zimmerman had “flaunted the system” by not disclosing how much money his website had raised, said nothing about being in possession of a second passport and it appeared that he was preparing to leave the country to avoid facing second degree murder charges.
Zimmerman, 28, is charged with second degree murder in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teen in February earlier this year. Zimmerman has said that, he shot the teen in self-defense.
