Scott Rothstein, the Fort Lauderdale attorney, who masterminded a Ponzi Scheme of over $1.2 billion, was yesterday ordered to remain in jail until his trial. Prosecutors and FBI agents said that Rothstein’s law firm gave out millions in campaign donations to state and federal candidates, since he began his scam in 2005. Governor Charlie Crist was one of Rothstein’s main beneficiaries.
MIAMI HERALD: Crist, a Republican, received more contributions from Rothstein and attorneys of his law firm, Rothstein Rosenfeldt Adler, than any other candidate this year: $80,450 for his U.S. Senate bid, according to campaign finance records.
Asked whether he would return all the money now that federal authorities are alleging Rothstein’s contributions were tainted, Crist said: “Well, certainly, if there’s evidence that indicates [wrongdoing] that’s exactly what we would do.”
