In the next edition of Inside the Magic, Sun Sports and FOX Sports Florida profile the Orlando Magic’s newest superstar as he returns to Florida to play for his hometown team. Inside The Magic: Vince Carter, hosted by Whit Watson, premieres on Sun Sports Friday, November 6, at 10 p.m., after the Pistons at Magic telecast, with encore presentations scheduled to air on both networks.
Before becoming an eight-time NBA All-Star, Vince Carter got his start in Central Florida, where he was a high school standout under Coach Charles Brinkerhoff at Mainland High School in Daytona Beach. Inside the Magic tells the story of Carter’s prolific high school career and how he led the Bucs to a Class 6A state championship during his senior season. As a senior, Carter also participated in a halftime slam dunk contest during a Magic game at the Orlando Arena, wowing the crowd with his high-flying acrobatics.
Inside the Magic looks back on Carter’s career, where he was a star at the University of North Carolina before being drafted fifth overall by Golden State in the 1998 draft. After a draft-night trade to Toronto, Carter became one of the top young stars in the NBA, winning the 1999 Rookie of the Year award.
In 2000, Carter won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest behind an array of dunks including a 360 windmill and his now-infamous “elbow-in-the-rim” dunk. Seven more all-star games and six seasons with the New Jersey Nets later, Carter was dealt to the Magic. Inside the Magic talked with Carter and his mother, Michelle Carter-Scott, about the day Vince found out that he would be returning home to Central Florida.
Carter has also made a name for himself in the community, involving himself in philanthropic projects in both Florida and New Jersey. Inside the Magic takes viewers to Carter’s annual basketball camp, the Vince Carter Youth Basketball Academy, and also shows fans the dedication of the Vince Carter Sanctuary, a 100-bed state-of-the-art substance abuse treatment center that opened this summer in Bunnell, FL.
Finally, Carter and his teammates, including Dwight Howard, Rashard Lewis, Jameer Nelson and J.J. Redick, talk about the year ahead, the expectations for the team and the impact that the eight-time all-star will have on the defending Eastern Conference champions.
