Ground was officially broken Tuesday, on the $2.3 billion I-4 Ultimate project, which will rebuild Interstate 4 through metro-Orlando.

The project will rebuild 21 miles of I-4 from Kirkman Road in Orange County to just east of State Road 434 in Seminole County, adding two new tolled Express Lanes in each direction. The project, the biggest in central Florida, will also be replacing more than 140 bridges, reconfiguring 15 major interchanges and reconstructing the entire existing roadway.

Gov. Rick Scott who participated in today’s groundbreaking at the Maitland Interchange, said, when completed, “I-4 Ultimate project will reduce congestion while continuing to make our roadways better, safer and easier for Florida families and our visitors.”

Currently, about 1.5 million daily trips are made on Interstate 4.

At its peak, nearly 2,000 people, including engineers and designers, will work on the project, expected to be completed in 2021. Spinoff benefits will also accrue to businesses and workers supporting the project.

Crews began preliminary work on the I-4 Ultimate project on February 1.
