Hungerford Elementary earns National Recognition as Exemplary School

Panasonic Corporation of North America selected Hungerford Elementary School as one of 24 finalists in the 11th Annual Panasonic National School Change Awards.

Dr. Jenell Bovis and Book Club students

This award recognizes schools that worked hard to improve their performance. In its 11 years, this award has been sought by 800 schools from 45 states.

Hungerford Elementary is an “A”- rated school by the state Department of Education. Under the leadership of principal Dr. Jenell Bovis the school’s grade elevated from a “C” in 2008 to an “A” in 2009. In 2006, when Dr. Bovis began at Hungerford the school was rated “F.”

A student Book Club is among the many innovative teaching and learning strategies Dr. Bovis has put in place. Students read a book with her and then, during lunch time, she discusses one of its chapters with them.

Dr. Bovis and representatives from 23 other finalist schools will be recognized at a national awards ceremony on Monday, July 12, 2010 at Columbia University in New York City. Six schools nationally were named as winners of the award.
