James Maxwell

Port Orange police and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement spent Tuesday searching the backyard of a man in the Volusia County Jail and they say human remains have been found.

Cadaver dogs searched the backyard of a home on Brandy Hills Drive belonging to Jamex Maxwell, 44, accused of raping a 9-year-old girl last December.

Police have not yet identified the remains, but said, they are investigating a homicide.

Maxwell, who remains in the Volusia County Jail, was denied bond late last year. He is accused of abducting the Port Orange girl, raping her and depositing back at the Orange Police Department in December 2011. He has been charged with abduction and capital sexual battery.

Police put up crime scene tape and a fence around Maxwell’s house at 180 Brandy Hill Drive in order to protect the area.

Maxwell has a long criminal history including, attempted murder and burglary, authorities said.
