Millions of Floridians who depend on their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards, or food stamps, could not buy groceries on Friday for about six hours due to a technical problem. The glitch was caused by a nationwide outage impacting JPMorgan Chase, making all Florida cards stop working.
These cards are used by low-income Floridians who rely on them to purchase groceries and food they need to sustain their families on as well as to get temporary family-assistance payments.
Luckily, after 1pm, the Florida Department of Children and Families announced the problem had been resolved. Some retailers were able to manually enter card numbers and process sales, however there are no statistics available of the number of people who suffered from this glitch or were turned away.
