Earlier today, Friday, November 27th, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II opened the 60th Anniversary of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Conference in Trinidad and Tobago.
In her opening remarks, Her Majesty called attention to the core strengths that bind the 53 nation grouping together, including its common goals and values, making particular reference to peace, liberty and progress which are being pursued.
Noting that the strength of the Commonwealth lies in its peoples and values, Her Majesty said that she was proud of the international responses to global challenges that had been put forth by this group of nations. But, she said, on the eve of the upcoming Copenhagen Summit, Commonwealth countries had an opportunity to fashion a position on climate change, which pose not only a global threat, but particularly so for small vulnerable states.
Her Majesty also spoke to the importance of nurturing the millions of young people in whose future the Commonwealth lies and she challenged the group to show its relevance and support for them so that they could realize their ambitions.
The Queen made special reference to the current global economic crisis and its impact on small islands states. “For small island states, the buffeting of the economic storms of the last twelve months has provided a stern test; and great resourcefulness has been shown in order to meet the challenge. As an organization the Commonwealth must remain dedicated to building resilience among its smaller members,” Her Majesty said.
In concluding her remarks, Her Majesty expressed her hope that the series of meetings leading up the the Commonwealth Heads meeting, would chart the way forward for the 60-year-old group.
The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting started today, November 27th and will conclude on November 29th.
